Verification of Enrollment/Degrees

UC Berkeley offers two official verification instruments:

  1. Enrollment Verification (self-service for current students)
  2. Verification of Attendance and Degrees (for students, alumni and former students)

The University also offers a Letter of Good Standing and the additional services described below. For those with access to CalCentral, most verification services may be requested online.

Bear in mind that most verification services require that you are (or were) Officially Registered, which requires:

  1. Enrollment in courses;
  2. Payment of at least 20% of your tuition and registration fees; and
  3. No registration blocks.

Accessible to currently enrolled students via CalCentral, under the My Academics tab > Academic Records > Enrollment Verification > Enrollment Verification.

Important note: The data is refreshed weekly through the adjustment (add/drop) period and monthly thereafter. During the summer the data is refreshed at least once per session. Updates generally occur on Wednesday afternoons and reflect your enrollment status as of the preceding Monday at 7 AM.

Verification of Attendance and Degrees

Students or alumni may also obtain a degree or attendance verification online through the National Student Clearinghouse. However, this vendor charges a fee for verifications.

Note: We do not complete and certify third-party forms requiring information provided on the Verification of Attendance and Degrees or on the Enrollment Verification and Good Student Discount certificate available online. Many service providers and partner institutions have been advised of this policy, but feel free to print this letter from the University Registrar and submit it with your verification documents.

The Verification of Attendance and Degrees is most commonly used for:

Official Verifications include:

Letter of Good Standing or Dean’s Appraisal

There is no fee for the University’s standard Letter of Good Standing. However, if you wish the University to complete and certify a third-party form in lieu of the standard letter, there is a fee of $10 per form and/or delivery method.

Please submit the request form at least two weeks ahead of your deadline.

Employers and Other Parties not Affiliated with UC Berkeley

UC Berkeley has contracted with the National Student Clearinghouse, a nonprofit organization serving the higher education community, to verify the attendance and degrees of UC Berkeley students and alumni for all employers, service providers, and other third parties (not affiliated with UC Berkeley). The Clearinghouse may be reached by phone at: 703-742-4200. This vendor charges a fee for verifications.

Notary Services

Apostilles are available exclusively from the California Secretary of State. They certify the authenticity of signatures by California Notaries Public. If you need an Apostille for a document notarized by the Office of the Registrar, please visit the California Secretary of State for information and instruction.

An Apostille is likely not necessary for students eligible for the certified electronic diploma (beginning with Spring 2020 graduates). See the Credential Validation page for more information.

Additional Services

Current students may request these services on CalCentral under the My Dashboard tab > Student Resources > Submit a Form> Verification Request.

Alumni and former students with access may request these services on CalCentral: Forms > Submit a Form > Enrollment/Degree Verification.

Students and alumni who no longer have access to CalCentral may request these services by completing a Request for Verification form and submitting it in one of the following ways:

Verifying Graduation Before Degrees Are Posted

To prove that you graduated before degrees are posted, follow the instructions on the Transcripts & Diplomas page of the Registrar website.

Full-Time Enrollment

The Office of the Registrar certifies enrollment status based on the minimum unit loads required to be considered a Full Time student. These thresholds are used for all University of California, state, and federal reporting requirements, as well as to determine eligibility for financial aid and student loan deferments (both of which generally require at least Half Time enrollment). The enrollment thresholds cited below are enforced even if your school, college or program requires a greater unit load or authorizes you to enroll less than Full Time.

Undergraduate Graduate Law
Full Time 12 12 10
Three-Quarter Time 9 – 11.9 9 – 11.9 7.5 – 9.9
Half Time 6 – 8.9 6 – 8.9 5 – 7.4
Less than Half Time 0.5 – 5.9 0.5 – 5.9 0.5 – 4.9

Important Note: The various schools, colleges and graduate programs may have different enrollment requirements — particularly at the undergraduate level. Please check with your school, college or program office for enrollment requirements specific to your program.
